Maurilio Cacciatore's music attempts to combine acoustic instruments with digital music through computer programming and the use of electromechanical objects. This results in a complex, multi-layered sound texture, with classical instruments and pure electronics operating at the extremes, while the middle ground employs hybrid sounds associated with unconventional performance techniques.
Beyond standard spatialization schemes, Maurilio Cacciatore's setups explore uncodified solutions and creatively integrate hardware, algorithms, and heterogeneous musical content. The theatrical dimension of the installations and the integration on stage between music and visual aspects stem from the balanced interplay of the available resources reflected in the scores.
A student of Fabio Cifariello Ciardi and Ivan Fedele, Maurilio Cacciatore achieved the highest grades in Italy, Sweden, and France and earned a PhD cum laude on his musical and technological research at the Catholic University of Porto. He has been a composer in residence at the studios of Ircam, ZKM, Muse en Circuit in Paris, the Electronic Studio Basel, SWR Freiburg, and Art Zoyd (Valenciennes, France).
He teaches Electroacoustic Music Composition at the "A. Steffani" Conservatory in Castelfranco Veneto. He is regularly invited to give seminars and masterclasses on composition and his music. He has lectured at the S. Martin University in Buenos Aires and has been teaching at various institutions in Maputo (Mozambique) since 2017.
In 2010, he received the "Goffredo Petrassi" Prize from the President of the Italian Republic (Hon. Giorgio Napolitano). In 2012, he won first prize at the International Composition Competition "Premio Trio di Trieste". In 2016, he represented Italy at the International Rostrum of Composers. In 2017, he was awarded the "Produktion Preis" at the Giga-Hertz Prize of the ZKM Karlsruhe. His music is performed by prominent soloists and institutions such as: Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre National de Lorraine, Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano, Ensemble Intercontemporain, SWR Experimental Studio Freiburg, Ensemble Hanatsu Miroir, Ensemble Linea, Ensemble Proxima Centauri, Kammerorchester Basel, Ensemble Phoenix Basel, Ensemble Aleph, Ensemble L'Arsenale, Ensemble Algoritmo, Ensemble Sentieri Selvaggi, Contempoartensemble, Ensemble Accroche Note, Choir Le Cris de Paris, Choir Voix de Strass.
His work as a composer, researcher, and teacher takes him regularly to Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia. In 2018, he oversaw the construction of the CIMM (Centro Informatico Musicale Multimediale) at the Venice Biennale, where he was a tutor until 2020.
His music is published by Edizioni Suvini Zerboni (SZ Sugar). In 2021, he became the artistic curator of the video concert series Incroci on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation together with the Italian Cultural Institute in Melbourne. He is a co-founder of the Syntax Ensemble.
