The new soundtrack for the silent film È Piccerella (1922), directed by Elvira Notari, represents a creative dialogue between past and present through the musical vision of composer Maurilio Cacciatore. Commissioned by the Italian Cultural Institute in Beirut for the Italian Film Festival in Lebanon, the work will premiere on February 2, 2025, at the prestigious Cinema Metropolis.
Maurilio Cacciatore has created a score that combines virtual synthesizers and digitally processed instrumental parts to craft a rich and immersive sonic dimension. During the screening, the composer himself will perform live with small instruments manipulated in real time, further enhancing the musical texture and deepening the connection between performance and cinematic storytelling.
Elvira Notari, regarded as a pioneer of Italian cinema, stood out for her creative courage in a male-dominated era. Author of over sixty films, she was one of the first female directors in the world to explore themes related to women's conditions, individual freedom, and social criticism. È Piccerella tells the story of a young woman striving to assert her independence within a context shaped by oppressive conventions. This message of emancipation takes on even greater significance when placed in the context of Fascist Italy, where the regime promoted a rigid, subordinate role for women in society.
Notari clashed with Fascist censorship, which hindered the distribution of her works due to their social content and authentic portrayal of the working class. Nevertheless, her cinematic production remains a vital testimony of cultural and artistic resistance, and È Piccerella stands as a symbol of her struggle to give voice to strong and independent female characters.
